This report presents data for the 12 cervical-cancer screening program-performance indicators for women 20 to 69 years of age and for the years 2006 to 2008. The 12 cervical-cancer screening program-performance indicators are organized into five areas to help monitor cervical cancer screening progress:
- Coverage
- Cytology performance
- System capacity
- Follow up
- Outcomes
This report presents information on the performance of cervical screening programs across Canada. The goal of cervical screening is to reduce the number of cervical cancer cases and deaths. Screening programs help through the early detection and treatment of both pre-cancerous lesions and early-stage invasive cervical cancer.
How cervical cancer screening programs are organized varies across the country. The following provinces contributed data for this report: Newfoundland and Labrador, Nova Scotia, Manitoba, Ontario, Saskatchewan, Alberta, British Columbia and New Brunswick. Each province reviewed and approved the data and report for its cervical screening program. Also, all provinces and territories were kept up-to-date on the process.
The results provide baseline information about outcomes from cervical cancer screening programs across Canada. The results are influenced by the following factors:
- The level of screening program organization
- The target population, service access and provision
- Reporting thresholds for test results
- Follow-up and treatment
- Screening-interval recommendations
