Topic: Reducing wait for diagnosis

Notes:

  • From January 1, 2018 to December 31, 2019 the percentage of women (age 50 to 74) whose diagnosis was resolved within the target timeframe of five weeks when a biopsy was not required ranged from 73% to 77%.
  • From January 1, 2018 to December 31, 2019 the percentage of women (age 50 to 74) whose diagnosis was resolved within the target timeframe of seven weeks when a biopsy was required ranged from 40% to 52%.
  • The percentage of women receiving a diagnosis (cancer or not) within seven weeks increased from 73% in 2018 to 76% in 2019, while the percentage of women receiving a diagnosis within five weeks dropped from 72% in 2018 to 67% in 2019.

  • Of the total number of program colonoscopies completed between January 1, 2019 and December 31, 2020, 73% were completed within the wait time target of 60 days of positive FIT result.

Topic: Expanding models of care

Caveats/limitations: New Brunswick has one of the highest rates of in-hospital deaths in Canada
Notes:

  • Research indicates that cancer patients prefer to die at home or homelike settings. In 2019, 69.7% of cancer patients died in hospital and 12.5% died at home.
  • 22.9% of patients are admitted to acute care hospital twice or more in the last month of their life.
  • Research indicates that many of the admissions to acute care hospitals could be prevented by developing community-based palliative care services. However, patients with complex medical needs may require admission to acute care hospital to receive an appropriate care.
